  • Impact of Non-Profit sector in Berkshire County

On October 28th, the Berkshire Chamber of Commerce (with the BCREB as part of the Task Force) revealed the results from a study conducted on the economic impacts of nonprofit organizations in Berkshire County.

Here are just a few highlights:
    · Berkshire County has over 1,026 certified nonprofit organizations.
    · We have considerably more nonprofits per capita than all of Massachusetts or the US.
    · The biggest impact any organization makes on the local economy comes from their expenditures, money spent (for labor, utilities, supplies, etc.) to produce goods or services. Berkshire County nonprofits had expenditures of over $1.1 billion. That’s 21%, or more than one-fifth of the total goods and services purchased in our county. Expenditures for the Arts and Culture sector increased 248% between 1996 and 2006.
    · Many non-profit organizations in Berkshire County have significant economic impact beyond that generated by their organizational expenditures alone. Many attract visitors into the county, who spend money that would not otherwise be spent here, creating their own significant level of economic impact.

The nonprofit sector is of great importance to the local Berkshire economy. It directly and indirectly generates $1,910,432,765 in economic activity and accounts for approximately 25,069 full or part time jobs.
